Description
When you need freight management for shipments smaller than a truckload, we offer specialized LTL carriers who work exclusively with less-than-truckload (LTL) freight. LTL trucking companies use the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) to determine the class of commodities being shipped. The NMFC determines class using a shipment or commodity's weight, density, value, stow ability and ease of handling. For example, a 10,000-pound shipment of ball bearings will take up a smaller portion of the truck than 10,000 pounds of ping pong balls. Typically, denser freight would have a lower class than fluff freight and thus cost less per pound to ship.
Less-than-Truckload or LTL carriers move many different customer's shipments on the same truck. Many of these carriers operate on a hub-and-spoke system. This means that they have a local terminal that is responsible for picking up a shipment and then moving all of their shipments into a main shipping hub for their particular region to be sorted and sent to a final destination terminal for delivery.
